CTJ Drum Majors

On April 26, 2016, the Johnson Band held its annual auditions for 2016-17 CTJ Drum Major positions. Twelve finalists were invited to audition after completing a lengthy application process including preparing a résumé, gathering teacher evaluations, and responding to more than a dozen short answer essay prompts. During the audition process, the candidates conducted about two and a half minutes of the opener, and participated in an interview to allow the panel better insight into their goals as a student, their philosophy on teamwork, and their ability to cultivate a healthy and familial environment in the band program. We are now prepared and excited to announce our 2016-17 Drum Majors.

Our Head Drum Major and Band President is Briana Gonzalez. A current junior, Briana plays flute in the Wind Ensemble and serves as one of our flute section leaders. She has earned chairs in the TMEA All Region Bands the last two years, and advanced to Area this year. Briana has been one of our most dedicated leaders and is extremely well respected by her peers and band directors.

Aaron Wallick will serve as an Assistant Drum Major and will also continue to march. Aaron is a junior, and a euphonium player in the Wind Ensemble. He is a two-time TMEA All State Band member, and a current section leader. This coming January, Aaron will march in the 128th Tournament of Roses Parade with the Bands of America Honor Band. Aaron practices servant leadership, and has done a wonderful job building a sense of family in the baritone section.

Another current junior, Audrey Payne will serve as an Assistant Drum Major, after doing a wonderful job as one of our flute section leader this past year. Audrey is a top student and musician at Johnson High School. She is very active as a volunteer, and goes out of her way to help other students in the program. Audrey has consistently earned chairs in all region band, and the last two years has advanced to TMEA All Area Band.

Our next Assistant Drum Major is Bryce Freund, a junior trumpet player in Wind Ensemble. Bryce currently serves as one of the Vice Presidents of our Music Library, where he has been active in helping manage music distribution throughout the school year. In addition, Bryce is a trumpet section leader, and has achieved consistent success in TMEA All Region auditions and Solo and Ensemble. Bryce always follows through with his commitments, and is an outstanding role model in the band.

Finally, we have selected Allan Foote as our Junior Assistant Drum Major. Allan is currently a bass trombonist in Wind Ensemble and our jazz band. Allan placed into our top concert band as a freshman, and has excelled in the TMEA audition process, placing 3rd in the area this year as only a sophomore. Allan’s positive attitude and enthusiasm have been inspirational throughout our program, and we look forward to his leadership for the next two seasons.

Our incoming drum majors have a wonderful opportunity over the next month to work alongside of our 2015-16 Drum Majors Angeline Rosado, Bennet Blevins, Cameron Prescott, Camie Sanchez, and Nat Hsu. They will spend these weeks training and “learning the ropes” as we prepare for June band camp.

We are also very excited for our upcoming Captain, Section Leader, and Elected Officer Auditions, held in early June.

Congratulations to all!
