CTJ’s Robinson Earns Superintendent’s Award

Congratulations to CTJ French horn section leader Jazmin Robinson, who earned the Superintendent’s Award at the Claudia Taylor Johnson High School Senior Awards Ceremony on April 24. The following is an excerpt from the program regarding this incredible honor: “The Superintendent’s Award is the highest recognition given to a Johnson graduate. The recipient exemplifies the highest academic achievement, superior leadership, and quality community service.” Said CTJ Director of Bands Jarrett Lipman, “We are incredibly proud of Jazmin for this accomplishment, and ALL of our seniors who were recognized tonight. We are blessed to have so many driven and successful band members.”

CTJ trombonist Farnsworth gets Eagle Scout rank

Congratulations to Kyle Farnsworth, one of our trombone section leaders, who earned the rank of "Eagle Scout" on March 13 at his Eagle Board of Review. Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), and the designation has has a long history since its founding over 100 years ago. Only four percent of Boy Scouts are granted this rank after a lengthy review process. The requirements necessary to achieve this rank take years to fulfill. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges. The Eagle Scout must demonstrate Scout Spirit, an ideal attitude based upon the Scout Oath and Law, service, and leadership. This includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. Kyle is a member of the Wind Ensemble and Full Orchestra at CTJ, and has played with the jazz band in prior years. He is a TMEA All-Area bass trombonist, and comes from a long line of great Johnson/Reagan band members. His older brothers were all in band at CTJ and Reagan; Zachary was our former Brass captain and trumpet soloist, Ryan was a member of our trombone section, and Michael was a trumpet player and section leader at Reagan. As a result, Kyle has grown up around the band program at CTJ, and we are thrilled to celebrate this accomplishment with him during his senior year.

Superior Ratings for CTJ Jazz Bands

The Claudia Taylor Johnson Jazz Band I and Jazz Band II each received Superior ratings during weekend competition at the 49th Annual Texas A&M Kingsville Jazz Festival. CTJ’s Jazz Band II placed second in the non-varsity division, and in individual honors, Johnson senior trumpter Clifton Sitterle and freshman trombonist Eli Canales received outstanding soloist awards and named to the competition’s All-Star Jazz Band. CTJ has participated in the Texas A&M Kingsville Jazz Festival — which draws more than 30 top jazz ensembles across South Texas — since the school’s opening 2008.

CTJ Winterguard Wins TCGC State Bronze Medal

Congratulations to the Claudia Taylor Johnson Winterguard on a fantastic season-ending performance with their show, “The Dream,” at the Texas Color Guard Circuit State Championships on April 1 in College Station, where the squad won the Bronze Medal in the Scholastic World Division. James Bowie and The Woodlands finished first and second, respectively. We are very proud of the guard members for their hard work and dedication throughout the season, and congratulate them on finishing strong.

CTJ’s Sharps Given Texas PTA Lifetime Award

Alan Sharps, Claudia Taylor Johnson associate director of bands, has been recognized with the Texas PTA Lifetime Membership Award. For more than 90 years, Texas PTA has made available the Honorary Texas PTA Lifetime Membership award as one of the highest honors that may be presented to individuals for outstanding service to children and youth.

Mr. Sharps regularly works 80-hour weeks on campus, arriving early in the morning and leaving late at night, in order to help students with additional tutoring on their instruments, or instructing our popular jazz band. He is a father figure for the students, as well as the other band directors on campus. He is always jovial, and always willing to help out however he can. He has a great knack for sound equipment, as he is also an amazing recording engineer, and shares these talents with other students on his own time when they are interested.

North East ISD will recognize Mr. Sharps and the other recipients of this award at the annual NEISD Founder’s Day Celebration in February 2017. Founder’s Day rotates between the seven campuses in NEISD, and this year it will be hosted at Johnson High School, so it will be wonderful for our students to see him honored that evening.
