Jazz Band

LaVigne, San Miguel First in State

Two Claudia Taylor Johnson band members have earned chairs in the prestigious 2018-19 Texas All-State Jazz Band.

Isaac LaVigne, Senior, Drum Set

Juan San Miguel, Junior, Alto Sax

Both Juan and Isaac placed first in an extraordinarily competitive audition process. Only four alto saxophonists, and four drum set players from the entire state advance to the Texas Music Educators Association All-State Jazz Bands — and CTJ’s two students placed first in the process.

Isaac is also Johnson’s first band member to place in both the Concert percussion and Jazz drum set side of the process.

Both Juan and Isaac will perform at the TMEA convention in San Antonio in February 2019.

Superior Rating for CTJ Jazz Band 1

The Claudia Taylor Johnson Jazz Band 1 placed second overall in the 6A division at the 51st Texas A&M Kingsville Jazz Festival — the band’s best finish ever in the event and earning a Superior Rating for its performance. Sophomore saxophone Juan San Miguel was named the Overall Outstanding High School Musician at the two-day festival. In addition, Miguel joined Will Donoghue (trumpet, grade 11), Eli Canales (trombone, grade 10), and Isaac LaVigne (drums, grade 11) in being recognized as “All Star Musicians” — superior players among all jazz groups performing during the event.  CTJ has participated in the Texas A&M Kingsville Jazz Festival — which draws more than 30 top jazz ensembles across South Texas — since the school’s opening 2008.

Taft Jazz Festival: Jazz Band 2 had five of its members make the “All Star Jazz Band” following performances on April 7 — Noah Johnson, alto saxophone; Alejandro San Miguel, tenor saxophone; Preston Payne, tenor trombone; Eli Canales, tenor trombone; and Dylan Davidson, bass trombone.

Fredericksburg Jazz Festival:
Congratulations to our Jazz Band members on their fantastic performance on April 21 at the Fredericksburg Jazz Festival, placing first overall in the 6A division. The band took home awards for Outstanding Saxophone and Trumpet sections for the day, as well as Eli Canales (10th grade Trombone) and Juan San Miguel (10th grade Saxophone) taking home soloist awards.

CTJ Jazz Band

The Claudia Taylor Johnson Jazz Bands are a vital part of the band program. After marching band season they serve as Ambassadors for the Johnson Band Program and are the primary performance groups for all types of events in the community.

In addition to many performance opportunities within the school district they have performed for the President's Breakfast at the 2014 Tournament of Roses Parade, the State of the City Address for the City of San Antonio, Senior Awards Ceremonies, graduations, various music contests, and private events.

Alan Sharps is the director of the jazz groups. He has performed professionally for 30 years in Miami, Virginia Beach, and San Antonio. His students have performed for Broadway shows, written music for Hollywood movies and voted producer of the year with many productions.

The Johnson Jazz Bands are available to book for events between December and May of each school year by contacting Mr. Sharps at (210) 356-0519.

The 25/200 Club is an EASY way to financially support the Johnson Band on a monthly basis! Here is how it works: 200 people giving at least $25 a month! That would provide the band $300 per year, per person OR $60,000 per year if 200 people sign up! $60,000 per year will go a LONG WAY in supporting the Johnson Band! EVERY dollar raised goes directly back to the band program!
